District purchases licenses to screen films, videos

photo illustration of movie film reelMarcellus Central School District this year purchased a site license (also called an "umbrella license") for public performances of movies and videos at each of the three schools. These licenses give the district an opportunity to take advantage of very reasonable licensing costs in order to have access to hundreds of titles for special events that do not fall under "fair use" for an educational institution. (Please click here for more information about fair use for educational institutions.)

Why it matters?
The school district is responsible for copyright compliance on all school property. Even outside groups using our facilities fall under the district's umbrella of copyright responsibility.

These are not one-size-fits-all licenses, granting the district unlimited rights. Here is a brief summary of what is (and isn’t) included in the district licenses:
  • The district is licensed for public performance* of films and videos produced by the studios listed online at http://k12.movlic.com/studios. While this list is not exhaustive, it includes some of the largest Hollywood studios.
  • Video performances for family movie nights, before- and after-school care, clubs, holiday events, etc.
  • Limited fund-raising is allowed (selling of snacks during showings, for example).
  • Further information and ideas can be found at: http://k12.movlic.com/
The Marcellus licenses do not cover:
  • Any outdoor showing of videos (extra licensing is required).
  • Any film or video not produced by one of the "sole source" movie studios listed.
*Public performance refers to any free performance of a movie or video that is not directly tied to classroom teaching and curriculum and is protected under copyright law.
