New administrators appointed at Marcellus CSD

At its Nov. 3 meeting, the Marcellus Board of Education approved the appointment of Anthony Pascale as interim athletic director for the balance of the 2014-15 school year.

Mr. Pascale, former athletic director for West Genesee Central School District for 21 years, replaces Michael Free, who was reassigned to the position of interim K-12 math and science coordinator effective Nov. 1. Mr. Free replaces Elementary Curriculum Coordinator Cindy Bird, who is out on an extended medical leave of absence.

As with similar mid-year vacancies, and given Ms. Bird’s anticipated retirement at the end of the school year, the district plans to conduct a full search for the K-12 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) coordinator in the spring. At that time, Mr. Free will be able to apply for the new position or return to his old probationary assignment as athletic director for 2015-16.

The STEM coordinator position complements the K-12 humanities (English language arts, social studies, languages other than English and fine arts) coordinator position created this past year. Upon completion of her administrative internship at Fayetteville-Manlius Central School District office, Melissa Pietricola last spring was hired away from F-M, where she taught at the National Blue Ribbon-recognized Eagle Hill Middle School. Ms. Pietricola will move to Driver Middle School to replace Ms. Bird and assist Principal Janet O’Mara. Mr. Free will remain at the high school to assist Principal John Durkee.

“I hope the Marcellus community will join me in welcoming Mike, Melissa and Tony to their new assignments,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Craig J. Tice.

For the rest of this academic year, Mr. Free assumes a full slate of Annual Professional Performance Rating (APPR) duties as a lead evaluator, with training from the OCM BOCES network team. He also will work with the K-6 curriculum committees, content specialists and secondary departments in the disciplines of math, science and career and technical education.

“I appreciate the opportunity that the district has afforded me,” Mr. Free said. “Science and math were and still are my first passion as an educator. I look forward to working on the new challenges presented in meeting the new standards and frameworks in mathematics and science.”

Mr. Free earned his bachelor’s (biology) and master’s (geology) degrees and certificate of advanced studies (educational administration) from the State University College at Cortland and is permanently certified in earth science, biology, general science and as a school district administrator. From 1992 to 2007 he worked as a tenured science instructor at Skaneateles High School, where he also served as the associate athletic director. From 2007 to 2013, he was a tenured assistant principal at West Genesee High School. He has additional experience as a middle school science teacher in the East Syracuse-Minoa Central School District and was recently appointed as the Marcellus CSD chemical hygiene officer, per New York State Education Department regulations.

Mr. Pascale is also a graduate of SUNY Cortland, having earned a CAS in educational administration and a master’s in physical education. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education at State University College at Brockport. Mr. Pascale holds permanent certification (as a school district administrator and physical education instructor) from New York state.

“With additional experience for a number of years in the Liverpool Central School District, as a physical education teacher and coach, Mr. Pascale brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to this assignment, including more than 21 years of service as the director of physical education and athletics for the West Genesee CSD prior to his retirement in 2011,” Dr. Tice said.
