Marcellus Mustangs wrap up banner fall season

The Mustangs had an outstanding fall 2014 season!

Last year, we had 480 students actively enrolled in grades nine through 11—the exact number of students needed to be classified as a Class A school by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). Marcellus is the smallest Class A school in Section III, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at our athletic teams’ successes this fall:
  • The varsity football team qualified for sectional playoffs, losing to Oneida in the first round of sectional playoffs. Their record for the season was 5-4.
  • Our independent girls swimmers competed well this season. Allison Comer and Colleen Ferguson qualified for and competed in the Section III girls swim meet. Allison posted personal records in the Section III meet in the 100-meter freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley, and Colleen competed in the 200-meter and the 500-meter freestyle.
  • In cross-country this fall, our boys team won the Freedom League Championship, and both teams performed well at the Section III championships. Pat McGuane came in fifth overall, which qualified him to run in the Cross-Country State Championships.
  • Girls tennis won the Freedom League Championship this fall. Our first and second singles and doubles team qualified individually to play in the individual sectional tournament. Haley Randall is the Section III, Division 3 girls tennis singles champion.
  • The boys varsity soccer team won the Freedom League Championship. They qualified for sectionals and made it all the way to the Section III, Class A championship game, where they lost to Jamesville-DeWitt.
  • The girls varsity soccer team won the Freedom League Championship. They qualified for sectionals and also made it through the brackets to the Section III, Class A Championship game, where they lost to Jamesville-DeWitt.
  • The girls volleyball team qualified for sectional playoffs and also made it through to the Section III, Class B championship game, where they lost to Solvay.
To recap, four of our fall varsity teams were Freedom League Champions. Three of our fall varsity teams played in the Section III championship games and were Section III finalists. We had one individual Section III champion in girls tennis, and one individual that qualified for the state cross-country meet!  Outstanding season for the Mustangs!

We also had two seniors sign National Letters of Intent to play girls lacrosse next year in college. Audrey Cerrone will play at Marist College, and Alexandra Burrows will play at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Congratulations to both!
