Marcellus teacher faces misdemeanor charges

Dec. 1 news update.

The Marcellus Central School District was informed on Tuesday, Nov. 25, that a tenured teacher at the high school has been charged by New York State Police with three Class A misdemeanors: two counts of forcible touching and one count of endangering the welfare of a minor. The teacher was immediately placed on paid leave and directed to refrain from entering school property until further notice, to ensure no further contact with our students at school or school activities, while an investigation continues.
We are cooperating fully with the New York State Police. In addition, we are conducting our own internal investigation. Please know that we take this matter very seriously, and that the safety of our students is our paramount concern. At this juncture, we must remind everyone that under our legal system, everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Until or unless the teacher admits guilt or is proven guilty, this person is entitled to the presumption of innocence, not only in the criminal proceeding, but also as a tenured teacher.
A letter is being mailed home today to all parents to make sure they have been informed about these allegations. (Click here to view the letter.) We cannot provide any additional information at this time, as it involves a police investigation and is a personnel matter, and we are limited in what we can say about it.
As is always the case, if you have reason to believe any school employee or volunteer might have engaged in inappropriate and/or unlawful conduct toward your child, we encourage you to promptly report your concerns to the school principal, superintendent or any other member of the district’s professional staff. In addition, the Abused Persons Unit at the McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center is available as a resource for students and parents, according to state police.
