Capital project vote is TODAY

Photo illustration of chalkboard with message; Don't forget to vote March 10th!On Tuesday, March 10, residents of the Marcellus Central School District will have the opportunity to vote on a proposed $14.85 million capital project on campus.

If approved, the project would focus primarily on upgrading the high school for 21st century educational programming, but also include enhancements at C.S. Driver Middle School and K.C. Heffernan Elementary School that were prioritized in the district’s most recent state-mandated Building Condition Survey.
The proposal goes before district residents for a vote between noon and 9 p.m. TODAY at Marcellus Senior High School, 1 Mustang Hill, Marcellus.

Scaled down from an earlier proposal rejected by Marcellus voters last October, the project now includes:
  • K.C. Heffernan Elementary School: enhanced secure entrance; roof replacement over a kindergarten wing; and replacement of 19 classroom heating and ventilation units ($973,125).
  • Driver Middle School: enhanced secure entrance ($40,000).
  • At Marcellus High School: complete renovation of all classroom spaces, including computer labs and the science, math and humanities wings; addition of a choral room; roof replacement over music wing; reconfiguration of guidance, nurse, school resource officer and main offices; new corridor lockers; new whiteboards (to replace chalkboards) and new secure entry court ($13,830,953).
Built in 1965, the high school was designed to accommodate the classroom needs of a bygone era. Today’s emphasis on career and college readiness among the nation’s high school students has drawn into sharp relief the need to create an environment that fosters 21st century learning at Marcellus Senior High School.

When it returned to the drawing board after the first proposal’s defeat, the district facilities committee worked toward and met several goals: Incorporate feedback from residents; lower the project cost (from $18.5 million to $14.85 million); increase the amount of work eligible for state aid (from 88 to 98 percent); and reduce the cost to local taxpayers (from $57 for a $100,000 home to $33 – a 42 percent drop).
