Superintendent to leave Marcellus to take helm at Fayetteville-Manlius

Head shot of Dr. Craig J. TiceAfter 11 years at Marcellus Central Schools, Dr. Craig J. Tice announced Monday he will resign his post at the end of this school year to take over from retiring Fayetteville-Manlius Superintendent Dr. Corliss Kaiser.
The F-M Board of Education voted unanimously Monday evening to appoint Dr. Tice as the district’s next superintendent, effective July 1. Dr. Tice notified Marcellus board members and administrators of his decision earlier Monday.
He has served as the district’s top administrator since 2006. He also served two years as the Marcellus assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
“It goes without saying that I have thoroughly enjoyed my 11 years of service to the Marcellus Central School District,” Dr. Tice said. “While the duties, responsibilities and projects have been enriching, it has been the relationships and friendships that I built over the years in working with the students, their families and my fellow employees that have been the most meaningful and rewarding.”
Marcellus board members will meet in coming days to decide next steps for filling the vacancy created by Dr. Tice’s departure.
“Under Dr. Tice’s superb leadership over the past nine years, Marcellus has flourished as an environment that encourages not only academic excellence, but also cooperation, collaboration and citizenship from its students and staff,” Marcellus Board President Ryan Riefler said. “We look forward to the possibility of future collaboration with Craig as he begins this next chapter – just 20 or so miles away. And we wish him every success.”
Dr. Tice is a former high school science teacher for the Webster Central School District. He also worked 13 years for the Skaneateles Central School District, first as an elementary curriculum coordinator for mathematics, science, health and technology and then as the State Street School principal. Dr. Tice was a member of the administrative team at Skaneateles when the school district received the Governor’s Excelsior Award and two buildings earned National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence recognition.
Dr. Tice’s leadership in school improvement has extended to both national and statewide organizations.
In New York state, he has served as president of the School Alliance for Continuous Improvement since 2008 in addition to serving as a member of the New York State Council of School Superintendents House of Delegates and the Commissioner’s Advisory Council. In 2012, the New York State Education Department vetted Dr. Tice to serve as an Outside Educational Expert with the Binghamton City School District as part of the Diagnostic Tool for School and District Effectiveness Initiative – a school improvement model co-developed at Harvard, Brown, Columbia and Yale universities.
At the national level, Dr. Tice was recruited to join select superintendents from across the country to participate on a collaborative panel convened by the American Association of School Administrators. He was also chosen to serve as a commissioner with the Middle States Association.
Dr. Tice, whose youngest child, Molly, graduates from Marcellus High School this June, plans to relocate to the F-M district with his wife, Dr. Stacey Lane Tice. The couple’s two older children, both Marcellus graduates, are Megan, a graduate student in speech language pathology at Nazareth College, and Matthew, a junior biomedical engineering major at Syracuse University.
