For the fifth year in a row, the Buffalo-based business magazine, Business First, has ranked the Marcellus Central School District sixth in academic performance out of 54 public school districts in the six-county Syracuse region.
The Syracuse area rankings, which include school districts in Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, Oswego and Tompkins counties, were released June 11 as part of the business magazine’s annual ranking of eight markets in Upstate New York: Albany, Binghamton-Elmira, Plattsburgh, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica-Rome, Watertown and Western New York.
The rankings were based on the last four years of test results and graduation rates available from the New York State Education Department.
Business First’s 200-part formula covered everything from statewide English and math exams for third-graders up to the full battery of Regents exams for high-schoolers.
“To be recognized for five consecutive years as being in the top echelon of schools in Central New York is quite a prestigious honor,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Craig J. Tice said. “This is especially important when one realizes Marcellus has the lowest cost-per-pupil out of the top half-dozen school districts on the list. Now that the initial, five-year cycle of curriculum task forces has ended and our curriculum maps will soon be available to the general public on our website, I know the sky is the limit for Marcellus schools.”
The magazine plans to continue releasing parts of its comprehensive 2015 Schools Guide, including broader Upstate region rankings, as well as subject rankings for English-foreign languages, math, science and social studies, in daily installments throughout the month of June.
The top 10 districts in the Syracuse area, according to the 2015 Business First rankings, are:
- Fayetteville-Manlius (Onondaga County)
- Cazenovia (Madison County)
- Skaneateles (Onondaga County)
- Jamesville-DeWitt (Onondaga County)

- Marcellus (Onondaga County)
- Lansing (Tompkins County)
- West Genesee (Onondaga County)
