Marcellus bids farewell to Class of 2015

Graduation MHS Class of 2015Marcellus Central School District graduated its 150-member Class of 2015 in a June 28 ceremony that was long on nostalgia, short on empty seats and jam-packed with messages of hope for the future.

The 122nd Commencement drew a standing-room-only crowd to Marcellus High School’s Groeling Auditorium and included:
  • Musical performances by the Marcellus High School Symphonic Band, Marcellus High School TrueSound and the Marcellus High School Select Choir;

  • Speeches from Senior Class President Nellie Ramsden, Honors Graduate Stephen Larison, High School Principal John Durkee, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Craig J. Tice and science teacher Mark Sunheimer, whom the Class of 2015 selected as their commencement speaker.

  • A photo slideshow (produced by seniors Hannah Zimmer and Ana Clark), illustrating the students’ journey from chubby-cheeked tots to confident young men and women.
Ms. Ramsden spoke of the importance of words and her decision to eliminate three words in particular from her own vocabulary: can’t, hate and should.

“The words we’ve used so far have helped shape the people we are today,” Ms. Ramsden said.

Mr. Larison devoted his time at the lectern to talking about life’s most powerful force, love, and urged those in the audience to silently give thanks to someone whose love has made a difference in their lives.

“We’re all here today because of the love of someone else,” Mr. Larison said.

Mr. Sunheimer introduced some science into the proceedings with a speech about energy: the energy students have received from parents, teachers and others, and the energy they’ll now give back to the universe.

“Never forget the energy that people have given to you – whether you have received it positively or negatively, it makes you who you are,” he said. He also shot a series of selfies on stage with Mr. Durkee, Dr. Tice and the Class of 2015.
