Mustangs varsity football team to play in honor of Wounded Warrior Project

When the Marcellus High School varsity football team takes the field against the Cortland Purple Tigers at 7 p.m. Sept. 25, they won’t be sporting the usual white-on-green jerseys they wear for home games. Instead, they’ll be outfitted in special jerseys with camouflage numbers to recognize the Wounded Warrior Project, a veterans support organization in whose honor the team will play that night.

The stands will look different, too – at least the Mustangs hope so.

All next week, members of the varsity football squad plan to sell special Wounded Warrior T-shirts (pictured right) for $10 each during lunch periods, to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Students then will be encouraged to wear the shirts during the Friday night game.

“We’re supported pretty heavily in our community,” Assistant Coach Richard Belvito said. “And we wanted to do something to give back. So we put it to the players: What group do you want to help? And the team captains came back to us with the Wounded Warriors Project.”

Founded in 2003, WWP seeks to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other; and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. The organization offers a holistic rehabilitative effort to assist warriors with visible and invisible wounds as they recover and transition back to civilian life.
