Science Olympiad team wins dozens of medals, places fourth at regional competition

Marcellus Science Olympiad team photoMarcellus students earned medals in 21 of the 25 events and placed fourth overall at the Science Olympiad Midstate Division B Regional Competition held March 5 at North Syracuse Junior High School.

Driver Middle School science teachers Hannah Naczi and Mary Jo Hoeft and family and consumer sciences teacher Elizabeth Flamman brought three Marcellus teams to the competition, which drew a total of 23 teams from schools around the region. Most schools brought one team.

“We really wanted to allow as many students as possible the opportunity to participate,” Ms. Naczi said. “Although this does challenge us as coaches, it is great for the kids. Having said that, the students really have to do a lot of independent work and they really stepped up to the plate.”

Marcellus’ first team, comprised of 15 students in grades 7-9, competed for individual medals and worked toward a team score by competing in all 25 events. They earned medals in 21 of those events, placed fourth overall and qualified for the state competition that will be held April 8-9 at East Syracuse-Minoa.

The other two Marcellus teams were made up mostly of sixth-graders, but also included students from grades 7-9.  These students competed for and won nine individual medals in their events, but did not have to work toward a team score. This approach gives inexperienced students the opportunity to concentrate on one or two events (instead of three or four).
