Smart Schools Investment Plan available online, public hearing scheduled for April 18

graphic of cloud-connected devicesOn April 18, the Marcellus Board of Education will hold a public hearing on the district’s proposed Smart Schools Investment Plan, which outlines how Marcellus intends to use some of its $1.1 million allocation from the Smart Schools Bond Act for the 2016-17 school year.
The plan, available online here, includes the purchase of 566 touch-screen Chromebooks at a total cost of $163,574. The devices will be distributed to every student in grades 3-8, as well as every teacher.
In November 2014, New York voters approved a $2 billion bond referendum to provide each school district with funding for new educational technology and infrastructure improvements. The bond funding can be used for the purchase of classroom technology, such as interactive whiteboards and tablets; technology infrastructure, such as high-speed broadband, wireless capabilities or servers; to construct, enhance or modernize educational facilitates, either related to the state’s full-day prekindergarten initiative or to replace transportable classroom units that are being used; and to install high-tech security features in schools or on campuses.
A committee of parents, staff, students and information technology staff was formed in February and will continue to meet to explore how to best use the remaining Smart Schools Bond Act funds.

The public hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m. April 18 in the Marcellus High School Learning Commons.
