New superintendent, BOE discuss capital project

July 7, 2016 -- During the regular Board of Education meeting on July 5, new Marcellus Superintendent of Schools Michelle Brantner and Brian Cieslinski, new lead architect for the district’s capital project, presented a financial breakdown of what led to the $3.6 million gap that now exists between the amount voters approved in March 2015 ($14.8 million) and the $18.4 million now needed to complete the work as planned.

They also explained the three options currently available to the district, two of which involve using existing monies in fund balance and reserves to offset the local share of additional project costs, creating no additional tax impact for district residents. The third scenario would be to reduce the scope of the project to align with the original amount of money approved by voters. All three options would require an aggressive timeline if the district hopes to break ground on the project next July.

The Board plans to discuss the district’s options again at their next meeting on Aug. 15.

In other business:
  • Ms. Brantner took her official oath of office, along with re-elected Board members Ryan Riefler and Thomas West. (Janine Lundrigan, who also was re-elected in May, was not present at the meeting.) Board members also voted to keep Mr. Riefler and John Fuller as their president and vice president, respectively, in 2016-17.

  • Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Services Trish McCarron notified the Board of her intention to retire at the end of the 2016-17 year.

  • The Board of Education approved higher meal prices at Marcellus High School for 2016-17, to offset the loss in federal aid caused by the school’s departure from the National School Lunch Program. For grades 9-12, breakfast will now cost $2 and lunch will be $3.25.
