Marcellus teachers present at state math conference

Dec. 22, 2016 -- Marcellus High School math teachers Richelle Schettine and Craig Chamberlin delivered a presentation to colleagues from around the state last month, during the annual conference for the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State in Rye, New York.

In their presentation, “Conway’s Game of Life: Exploring Patterns Through Cellular Automata,” the pair took the participants through the process of creating cellular automata patterns in one dimension (see photo at right), allowing them to understand the rules and be able to link the patterns to those found in nature and in Sierpinski's triangle. They then coached the teachers through “Conway’s Game of Life,” a cellular automata game in two dimensions that creates simple and complex patterns that can be used in practical applications in biology, computer science and cryptography.

The teachers who participated walked away with a game to play with their students that will promote higher level thinking and problem solving, as well as the knowledge of a new topic.
