DMS gets ready for St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event
March 28, 2017 -- A team of Driver Middle School sixth-graders will once again brave the shave this weekend, surrendering their locks to raise awareness and money for pediatric cancer research during a St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser at the school.
The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (April 1) in the school’s old gymnasium.
“Team Jack,” formed in support of classmate Jack Brumfeld, is made up of Nate Alexander, Nolan Hammerschmidt, Peter Hubbard, Nolan Manahan, Ryan Orr, Kevin Shea, David Snook and Justin West.
“Their passion and energy give us hope that some day we will eradicate pediatric cancer and stop stealing precious childhoods,” said teacher Anita Pawlewicz, who organized the Marcellus shaving event. As of today, the event has raised more than $12,000 and included 25 participants. Here's a direct link to the event's fundraising page.
To help raise additional money for the event, the students organized a T-shirt sale, featuring a design created by Jack. Students and staff at DMS and K.C. Heffernan Elementary bought a total of 118 shirts, which were printed by community Tom Brady, who “worked hard to keep cost low and quality high,” said teacher and St. Baldrick’s participant Anita Pawlewicz.
“His classmates and teachers were thrilled to own a ‘Jack’ original,” Mrs. Pawlewicz said. “Jack's artistic ability is a gift we are glad he is willing to share.”
