BOE to vote on new KCH principal appointment June 19

June 15, 2017 -- After an extensive search, the school district has selected the next K.C. Heffernan Elementary School principal, whose appointment will be considered by the Board of Education at its June 19 meeting.

Robert “Bob” Montgomery, current principal of William H. Seward Elementary School in the Auburn Enlarged City School District and a Marcellus resident, emerged as the top contender in a pool of 42 applications that eventually was narrowed to three finalists. The final three were interviewed last week by parent, staff and administrative committees.

“Throughout the process, Bob’s passion for children and desire to become part of our school community made him stand out among our applicants,” Superintendent of Schools Michelle Brantner said. “Bob is a man of boundless energy, and that energy is infectious. Everything about his unique leadership style – from his colorful sneakers to his presence each morning outside the building, greeting students and parents before school – tells me he will quickly and easily make the connections and relationships necessary to allow him to support all learners and their families.”

Montgomery started his career in education in 2002 as an eighth-grade English teacher in Central Square. In 2003, he joined the faculty in Auburn, where he taught sixth-grade and served as a literacy coach. In 2008, he moved to Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) as a professional learning coach. In 2011, he returned to Auburn, first as the director of secondary curriculum and then as the elementary school principal. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education from the State University College at Oswego, where he also received his certificate of advanced study.

“For the last three years, my family and I have called Marcellus home,” Mr. Montgomery said. “We continue to be impressed by the local attractions and businesses, the school district and the strong sense of community. I am proud to be able to say that I live and now work in Marcellus.”

If appointed by the Board, Mr. Montgomery will begin in Marcellus on July 1. He replaces former Principal Gary Bissaillon, who recently accepted an elementary school principal post with Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School District.
