2003-04 girls soccer teams inducted into Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame
Oct. 30, 2019 -- The legendary Marcellus girls soccer teams of 2003 and 2004 – who were the first in Section 3 history to win back-to-back New York state championships – were inducted Monday evening into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame as a “team of honor.”
Proud Coach Laurie Updike accepted the award – joined by assistant coaches Lisa MacLachlan and Michael Vincent and Marcellus alumnae Amanda Stessen Blevins, Stephanie Gosson Ellis, Alyse O’Brien Bradley, Katie Zimmerman Brown, Jenna Farneti Fabian, Alyssa MacLachlan Foehrenbach, Candy Hofmann, Katie O’Laughlin Joyce, Meghan Mannion, Ashley Martin McIntosh, Jesse Reynolds Owen, Catherine Scott Petrocci, Jocie Jankowski Sommers, Katie Walter, Katie Young, Emily Zimmerman – during a ceremony held at the Oncenter in Syracuse.
The teams had a two-season record of 46-2-2, with 234 goals scored and 27 shutouts.
The teams previously were honored on Mustang Day in the village and twice by New York state proclamation on the floor of the Senate.
Of the teams’ players, eight went on to play in college: Candy Hofmann (now an assistant coach at Marcellus) at Syracuse University; Jenna Farneti at Duquesne University; Jocie Jankowski at Nazareth College; Alyssa MacLachlan (St. John Fisher College); Amy Ware (SU); Katie Zimmerman (Lynchburg College); Rachel Farneti (LeMoyne) and Hannah Vaughn (William Smith).
Mrs. Updike, was named the State Class B Coach of the Year, in 2003.
