Concussions
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.”
While we understand the student’s desire to get back to school as soon as possible, recent research has supported that an early return to cognitive stress while the brain is still healing is not in the child’s best interest and may hinder the student in his or her recovery. Cognitive rest is the best treatment for concussions. We are asking parents to keep students home if they are still experiencing symptoms of a concussion such as fatigue, headaches, or difficulty concentrating. All student athletes identified as having a concussion during their athletic season; must be cleared by the school Medical Director, Dr. Mark Pisik, M.D., prior to beginning the return to play protocol. Any other students identified as having a concussion as a result of an injury occurring both during the school day, after school, or on weekends; must be cleared by their personal physician, prior to their beginning the return to play protocol. The return to play protocol is a routine designed to slowly increase the amount of physical activity a student participates in. If you would like a copy of the Return to Play Progression, click on the link at the bottom of this page.
If the student’s personal physician or the school Medical Director, Dr. Mark Pisik, M.D. has cleared your child to return to school and they still need frequent breaks and rest time, we will be sending them home until they can make it through the time approved by the doctor (partial or full day).
If you have any questions on our procedures, please contact Jean Sharlow at 315-673-6000 or jsharlow@marcellusschools.org.
Use of School Facilities
The Marcellus Central School District Board of Education encourages community use of school facilities when such use is in the public interest, and does not conflict with school activities. Staff and community groups can make facility use requests on our online application ML Schedules by following the steps below.
Step 1
All facilities use requests are to be completed online. The first step is to create a user account in ML Schedules. You can do this by clicking on the link to ML Schedules located after Step 2. Be sure to complete all information fields and then click the submit button. When you will receive an e-mail confirmation that your account has been approved, you may log into ML Schedules and begin to submit facilities use requests.
Step 2
Once your account has been created and registered, you can click on the link under Step 2 which will bring you to the Login screen for ML Schedules. Log in using your account information, choose the request by one of the four categories, complete all information fields and submit.
Click on this link, Help Sheet for Facilities Use Request, if you have questions with the completion of the online request form.
- School functions take precedence over non-school approved functions.
- All requests for Use of Facilities must be made online using ML Schedules at least two weeks prior to the intended date of use. If space is not available, or the requested date is within 14 days of event, ML Schedules will not allow request to be completed.

Hall of Fame
The Marcellus Athletic Hall of Fame committee is seeking nominations for induction into the Marcellus Central School Athletic Hall of Fame. Nominations may be made by any member of the school community and must be submitted by April 1, 2024 for induction consideration in the Fall 2024 Class.
The purpose of this program is to honor graduates, coaches or community members of the Marcellus Central School district, living or deceased, who have distinguished in the athletic program.
The Hall of Fame committee is composed of school administration, community residents, former coaches and athletes. The inductees will be selected from this committee using the nominations made by the public.

Indoor Track Community Hours
The DMS new gymnasium is primarily a physical education facility during the day. The raised three-lane walking/running trackover the basketball court was included to enhance our children’s physical education experience. In an effort to promote wellness, the district offers the indoor track facility for community use during part of the school year.
The track will be open to the community from Columbus Day through the end of April from 6:30-8:00 P.M., Monday and Wednesday evenings.
Those wishing to take advantge of using the indoor track should enter from the east side lobby door, proceed to the gym and up the stairs to the track. There will be a school district supervisor on duty to greet and sign in community members. The district uses this “sign-in” procedure to determine if the hours of community use should be expanded or reduced based on the interest level. It is asked that only sneakers be used to walk or run on the track. Children/students are encouraged to accompany their parents with the understanding that their supervision is the responsibility of the parents. Unaccompanied students/children may not use the track. Strollers are not permitted on the track surface. Be advised that those using the track will be responsible for the safety and security of their own belongings and valuables while utiliozing the facility.

Athletic Placement Process
The Athletic Placement Process was designed for mature and exceptionally skilled student athletes to advance to an upper level and less developed student athletes to participate at an appropriate lower level that is suited to their development and ability. The APP is not to be used to fill positions on teams, provide additional experience, provide an opportunity for middle school or junior high students when no modified program is offered, or to reward a student. It is aimed at a few select student athletes who can benefit from such placement because of their level of readiness. The Athletic Placement Process is designed to create a more equitable and fair competitive and learning environment for modified level student athletes.
Eighth grade students who demonstrate mental and physical maturity as well as exceptional skill may be advanced to the junior varsity or varsity level through this process. In certain specific circumstances and with permission from the Superintendent of Schools, seventh grade students who also demonstrate the mental and physical maturity as well as exceptional skill may be advanced to the junior varsity or varsity level through this process.
Read the entire Marcellus Athletic Placement Process at the link below. There are deadlines and requirements that must be met for coaches and any athletes that they want to move through this process.

Coaching Certification
To help provide a safe environment and successful experience for our student athletes who participate on interscholastic athletic teams, Section 135.4 (c) (7) (i) (c) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education pertaining to physical education include certain minimum requirements for a person to be appointed as a coach of an interscholastic athletic team. This includes all head coaches and assistants for varsity, junior varsity, middle school (modified) teams of public schools.
Potential secondary school coaches may possess three different backgrounds:
(1) a certified physical education teacher;
(2) a teacher certified in an area other than physical education, e.g. Science, Mathematics, Social Studies;
(3) holds no teaching certificate and must have a sport specific NYS Professional Coaching License or qualify for a sport specific NYS Temporary Coaching License.
Volunteer Coaching
Volunteer coaches are subject to the same coaching requirements as a paid coach.
Read all of the specific guidelines at the link posted below.
