Core Values

The Special Education Department in the Marcellus Central School District is committed to connecting with and empowering students to ignite their interests and abilities to prepare for their future.  Students who qualify for special education services under Part 200 Regulations of the Commisioner of Education have a wide variety of supports that are available to them.  Students are supported through Individualized Education Plans (IEP's) and are provided services in the least restrictive environment possible. However, at times an alternate setting may be required.  A small percentage of our students require more intensive support than can't be provided within our district. Therefore, we work collaboratively with the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES to identify the most appropriate program to meet each student's needs, and utilize the BOCES programs that are available to us.  It is our goal that all students exit our programs with the ability to be a productive and caring members of the community.

Support is provided for eligible students beginning at age three through high school commencement or the year in which the student turns age 22.  The Committee on Special Education (CSE) or the Committee on Pre-school Special Education (CPSE) meets at a minimum, annually, to review a student's progress based on the IEP goals. Based on that progress and the student's present levels of performance, goals are reviewed and created.  It is then determined what program and services are required to meet those IEP goals moving forward. In keeping the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) in mind, at times, regular education support programs may be the most appropriate level of support for students with disabilities.
